This Sucks

There. I said it. That's how I'm feeling right now. I just found out that we will not be physically back at school this year. And that sucks. I want to see my kids. Not just digitally see them on Google Meet. I want to give them high fives and hugs. I want to be able to tell them, "Good job, you made it through virtual learning. Now we've got some time together to finish out the year all together in one place." But we won't. And that sucks. Don't get me wrong--I think I've been doing a pretty good job teaching digitally, all things considered. But it's just not the same...and that sucks.

Less than a week

It was another full (and exciting) week, and it's hard to believe that next Tuesday is the start of a new school year! Monday and Tuesday had some professional learning centered around UDL: we looked at our district's "non-negotiables" for the teaching and learning that happens in Sheboygan Falls; we had an online session with UDL guru Allison Posey, who offered us some things to ponder and focus in on for the year; we took time to dive into the UDL checkpoints for the access level of the guidelines in order to identify ways that we can apply them into our classrooms; and, probably the most beneficial for me at this time, was the opportunity to do some UDL lesson planning with colleagues. This allowed me to get a closer look at my new science standards with a UDL lens. Another day off

It came unexpectedly, but today was another day off of school due to the weather. Freezing rain overnight led to difficult traveling conditions this morning and throughout the day...not that I would know, though, as I stayed put. So, the extra time gave me the opportunity to check some items off of the old to-do list along with some items to manage at home. This week has been a fun week at school! In 7th grade, the students have been learning about DNA and the process that goes into coding for amino acids and proteins. To help with understanding this, the students did a little decoding of a puzzle that required the students to use the bases of the DNA molecule. After learning about the decoding process, the students were then challenged with making puzzles of their own. The students worked in teams to create a puzzle message, code it, and then put the code into a DNA sequence. I could use that for something...

Probably just about every teacher has muttered those words at some point (I know I am most certainly guilty of it). And those words lead to cabinets, drawers, shelves, closets, nooks, crannies, and anywhere else that space is available to be filled up with random junk. But I can say that, as of last Friday, the only time my cabinets, drawers, and closets have ever been cleaner is when the school was brand new. I inherited my room 12 years ago, and I've organized and purged things from the previous resident here and there, but never to the full extent that I could have. It felt good last year to be able to downsize an entire filing cabinet full of master copies from my room. I had always told myself, "They were used by the last teacher, so I will probably use them, too." Some of it I did use, but the curriculum changes, and resources along with it.
