First Quarter in the Books!

Just like that, the first quarter of school is done. It also brought about the end of our ecosystem unit. On top of it all, it was a very long week! I have been fighting a cold all week, so that is going to lead me to a rather abbreviated blog post for this week. Here goes!
Monday: Students created and played review games to study for the ecosystem test! Students also began to take home the eco-columns.
Tuesday: As a class, we completed a study guide, and students played review games with new groups (to test out the different games :-)
Wednesday: Another round with the study guide to close up any misunderstandings/answer questions from the students and another round of review games; grades posted in the grade book for quarter reports.
Today: TEST DAY! I haven't graded them yet, but from just working my way around the classroom during the test it looks like they did well. FUN TIP! If you type up your own tests, insert the students' names into the test, such as "_________ wants to know what the process in which plants make their own food is called." The kids get a big kick out of it :-)

Well, that's the fast-forwarded version of the week, and I am going to get some sleep so that I can be ready for Friday! Should be a fun day--the students are going over to the high school to work on a project for STEM class, and in the afternoon we will be having a "block party" to celebrate the end of the quarter! I have a feeling I'll be pretty beat by the end of the day (but that's normal for this week).

Getting back into the swing of things...

Well, I've been able to spend a little time in my classroom the last few days...but not as much as I would like--we have some construction going on around school, so there is limited access. I usually take this time before I actually HAVE to be back at school (because those inservice days prior to school starting are never enough time). to work on my to-do list and ease back into things. I'm not sure if the general community actually realizes how much time teachers spend at school the few weeks leading up to our contractual time, but I would be willing to bet that at least 75% of elementary teachers are back in their classrooms before inservice starts (I can't speculate on middle and high school). Just five more minutes...

I think one of the hardest things about winter break is readjusting to the regular sleep schedule once school starts up again. To be honest, yesterday morning (the first day back) wasn't an issue probably because of adrenaline, but this morning was rough. It was one of those mornings that I wanted to just keep hitting the snooze. It was one of those mornings where I would have rather cuddled up in bed next to my daughter rather than trying to wake her up. But, alas, we had to get over our sleepiness and get on with the day. Today was a day that I have been looking forward to because it was the first day for presentations on semester-long projects for the students. Winding Things Down

Memorial Day has come and gone, and the feeling of summer is upon us. While it isn't quite here yet, it's close. If we were at school, the buzz of energy from the students would be through the roof. Virtually learning, however, has definitely put a damper on that. At school, we would be wrapping up units while trying to rein in the students' attention away from their dreams of sleeping in late and other summer plans. This week, units are still being wrapped up, but that struggle of reining in their attention isn't quite there; many of them probably already sleep in late, and summer plans are obviously still up in the air. Last week was when I officially wrapped up my final science unit, so this week was made up of some enrichment activities related to that final standard.
