What a week!
When I last left you, I had a classroom full of materials that needed sorting and storing. Well, I'm proud to say that is finished. It was a busy Monday and Tuesday getting the plethora (I like that word :-) of materials sorted and organized. I was able to meet with one of the other science teachers to have him inspect the materials and let me know what materials were needed and what ones were the typical teacher "I can probably use this somehow" materials. It was nice to meet with him, because he let me know that a good chunk fell into the latter category. So, I pitched some of the materials and kept others that I probably still don't need, but I'm going to make a promise to myself: I hereby swear that I will go through the cabinets in my classroom at the end of the year and get rid of any items that were not used. There. It's written. Can't be taken back...
Wednesday and today were the first official back-on-the-clock inservice days for the school district. It was a great first few days! Wednesday was a day with my middle school family in the morning, going over what would usually be the traditional back-to-school items. But, of course, this year will not be a typical year in the new middle school. There were all sorts of things to discuss that wouldn't fall into the typical territory, and from the discussions that went on, I can tell that I am going to be working with some experienced and fantastic colleagues. Following the morning whole-school meeting, we were given time to work in our classrooms, have a smaller team meeting, and then a great lunch from the new kitchen. The afternoon was then more work time in our rooms. I was able to use this time to start organizing some of the digital resources that my fellow science teachers shared with me so that I could start getting a better idea of the scope and sequence for 7th and 8th grade science.
Today started at the high school with the whole district being treated to breakfast, followed by welcome back messages, introductions of new staff members, and some safety protocol reminders. We then headed back to the middle school and gave some guided tours of the building. Following the tours, we had some health trainings from the school nurses, an additional meeting on safety protocols, and another fantastic lunch from the kitchen. The afternoon then provided me with more time to get acclimated to the curriculum and begin working on my classroom Canvas page (website).
After school today, we had a staff and family picnic at the park put on by the Falcon Club, which is the social group that I help coordinate. It was a nice time with some food prepared by the district food service crew and some lawn games. We had a small group of about 25 people. It would be nice to have more people come to the picnic, but I know it can be hard to commit to something after school before a long weekend (we don't have inservice tomorrow). Even though it was a small group, it was still a good time!
I'm going to spend the weekend away from school to get some things done around the house. The classroom itself is fairly ready for when students come to open house on Tuesday and Wednesday. I can't wait to see and greet my former students next week!
